About the Documentary

'An Australian Citizen's Diary' (working title) tells the inspiring and epic story of Eric.

At the age of 14 Eric and his family walked all the way from Rwanda passing through Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda and finally arrived in Kenya. Since they were traveling without passports or travel documents they had to cross the borders illegally during the night. While in Uganda they were arrested and spent 2 weeks in jail and upon release made it to Kenya where they ended up staying in Kakuma refugee camp for another 8 years before they were relocated to Australia by United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

15 years later Eric will be taking back a story of success to those he left behind in the refugee camps, what will they have to say? What does he have to offer?

Eric is an Australian citizen who is successfully completing tertiary studies, while working and living happily with the comforts so many people dismiss. 'An Australian Citizen's Diary,' sees Eric return to his homeland to retrace the epic journey he and many other African refugees took to reconnect with his country and community.

Eric will re-travel the path across Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya he initially took before travelling across the vast Indian Ocean to Australia. Eric's inspiring journey home, including his discoveries, reconnections and memories of the past will be documented in 'An Australian Citizen's Diary' to educate and captivate all Australians of the trials and tribulations faced by refugees.

Over the past decade approximately ten thousand people from Sub-Saharan Africa have migrated to Australia annually. Many arrive as refugees with little more than the clothes on their back. While numerous programs operate to facilitate the successful integration of African refugees into Australian communities, cultural and language differences often lead to feelings of isolation among individuals and limited understanding of the journey completed by refugees en-voyage to Australia.

This is a journey into the heart of a young man, and through his eyes we will see his ancestral land and retrace his steps. Those who have traveled as refugees will experience being known and understood, those who have never lived that life will have a window into life in exile.

Through sharing these stories we hope to shed light on a subject that is quite emotional and personal and bear witness to the impact of conflict. As the geography of our nation continues to change we have to come to terms with the background of new and emerging communities. It is an invitation to learn from Eric's reflections as he makes the journey.

This is a journey of humanity and all are welcome.
